The New Urban Agenda aims to enable governments, sub-national and local governments, and other stakeholders to achieve sustainable urban development. It provides for means of implementation, follow-up, monitoring and reporting on the New Urban Agenda. In support of the ASEAN Vision and the 'ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together,' and with the understanding of the important role of local governments in engaging the people and ensuring that the benefits of the ASEAN Community are enjoyed by the people for the future collaboration of cities and local governments in the ASEAN region. The networking event aims to:

a. Promote cross-border interactions between local governments, and to establish partnerships for the improvement of the quality of life and environmental sustainability within the region in accordance with the ASEAN Blueprint. The event presented agenda of Sustainable Development Goals and New Urban Agenda with emphasis on the people.

b. Increase awareness among city participants about the achievements of ASEAN's cities in localising the new global agenda in terms of improved data management; actions that result in visible transformation; and public involvement in implementing sustainable development practices;

c. Learn from what ASEAN's cities are doing to link their environmental activities to the Sustainable Development Goals and the New Urban Agenda to attract public and private funds, and what development partners are doing to support innovative sustainable city development practices;

d. Encourage peer learning, networking, multi-stakeholder collaboration between cities and development partners, and formulation of possible twinning partnerships among ASEAN cities.

The ASEAN recognizes the role of city governments in ensuring no one from their community is left behind in their development process. The ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) ensures that the welfare of the Southeast Asian peoples is at the center of ASEAN's priorities. ASEAN wants to build a caring and sharing community. ASEAN aspires to make the lives of every citizen, comfortable, progressive and worth living. Within the ASCC, ASEAN Member States cooperate in the areas of health, education, environment, labour, social welfare, women and children, and culture and arts, among others. ASEAN envisions a community where each and every one is treated equally.
