In 2015, the Sustainable Development Goals was approved with 'Sustainable Cities and Communities' listed as the SDG 11; In 2016, the New Urban Agenda was approved, leading the direction for global urban development.
To that end, SUC (Beijing) Programme Management Center/SUC PMC and the United Nations Environment Programme/UNEP joint hands with many other global organizations in jointly preparing the Guidelines for Sustainable Cities and Communities/SUC Guidelines and launching the 'Sustainable Urban Development and Liveable Garden Community Programme/SUC Programme'. It aims to provide a set of new 'Evaluation Criteria', 'Management System' and 'Technical Guidelines' for development of sustainable cities and communities in developing countries as well as select cities for pilot testing. Up until December 2017, the draft framework of SUC Guidelines has been finalized.
'Networking Event on SUC Initiative for Sustainable New Cities and Communities' aims to provide an overall overview of the three sections of draft framework of SUC Guidelines and how cities and communities can benefit from it; relevant cities, communities and international organizations will jointly launch the 'Initiative for Sustainable New Cities and New Communities' as well as release the list of the first batch of SUC demonstration pilot cities and communities in China; discussions and dialogues on how to apply SUC Guidelines to development of 'new cities' and 'new communities' in developing countries will be conducted.
The event will also look into how cities and communities in developing countries along the 'Belt and Road Initiative' can participate in this initiative. SUC will provide SUC Guidelines and technical guidance from experts for these cities and communities free of charge.
