The New Urban Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction recognize the important role local governments play in designing and implementing activities to build urban resilience and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Both agreements call upon local governments to develop integrated local Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Resilience plans to guide their actions.
This panel discussion, co-organized by UNISDR and UN-HABITAT with the support of the European Commission, offers a unique opportunity to share good practices from the cities members of the UNISDR’s led Making Cities Resilience Campaign “My City is Getting Ready!” and partner cities of the UN-HABITAT’s City Resilience Profiling Programme on the development and mainstreaming of DRR plans and multi-stakeholder’s engagement in the operationalization of resilience building strategies. This session will provide insightful examples for cities not only on the planning and implementing of the risk-sensitive plans but also on engaging multi-sectoral dialogue in resilience building processes, which in turn contributes directly to the implementation of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the New Urban Agenda and SDGs.
At the end of the session, there will be a launch of publications tailored for cities and local governments, namely the ‘Handbook for Local Government Leaders’ – a practice manual developed to support local authorities in developing and implementing DRR polices, and the Report ‘Local Government Powers for Disaster Risk Reduction: A Study on Local-Level Authority and Capacity for Resilience’ – a study on current power and capacity of local authorities in implementing DRR actions.
