Inclusive Multi Stakeholders’ Partnerships

The objectives are:

• To share and learn from inclusive pro-poor; gender and age sensitive multi stakeholder policies; approaches and programmes that promote cities for all and transformation of peoples’ lives; policies and legislation at all levels;
• To identify good practices; scalable programmes; gaps in existing multi-stakeholder approaches; and actions to increase collaboration and accelerate implementation of the New Urban Agenda;
• To review a stakeholder collaborative framework on implementation of the new urban agenda and relevant Sustainable Development Goals; and make recommendations.

The full and effective implementation of the New Urban Agenda; urban related Sustainable Development Goals and other internationally agreed commitments hinges upon an enabling environment; coupled with specific and collective actions at global; regional; national; sub-national and local level. Key to this is the will of people; communities; local and national governments to own the process and results.

Global partnerships are at the centre of sustainable urban development and the achievement of the New Urban Agenda transformative commitments- social inclusion and ending poverty; sustainable and inclusive prosperity and opportunities for all; safe and environmental sustainability and resilient cities and human settlements.

The New Urban Agenda recognises the role of stakeholders and multi stakeholder partnerships during implementation; follow-up; monitoring and reporting on the New Urban Agenda.

A stakeholder collaborative framework is being developed by UN-Habitat working with diverse partners. The overall aim is to support transformed lives and processes; and to put sustainable urban development at the centre of local; subnational; national; regional; and global development agendas. This special session will enable partners to critically examine current approaches; policies and programmes; and make recommendations towards effective inclusive multi-stakeholder partnerships for implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.

Q1: How can people and communities be effectively engaged in monitoring and reporting on implementation of the New Urban Agenda?

Q2: What monitoring methodologies and tools are required for use by communities and other stakeholders; especially civil society; grassroots and informal sector organizations to monitor and report on progress towards achieving the New Urban Agenda transformative commitments?

Q3: What is the current progress and the challenges faced at local; subnational; national and regional levels?

Q4: What are good examples and lessons learned on inclusive multi-stakeholder partnerships at the global; regional; national; sub-national and local level? What policies; legislation and practical measures are in place to facilitate multi stakeholder sustained participation?

Q5: Can the success achieved at the global level by the Urban SDG Group that led to adoption of SDG11 – Make Cities and human settlements inclusive; safe; resilient and sustainable be replicated at the regional and national level to make urbanization a priority area of development agendas?

Q6: What collective follow-up actions are needed in order to accelerate implementation of the New Urban Agenda and relevant Sustainable Development Goals? Which strategic partners are not sufficiently involved and how to bring them on board?
