Summary

For cities to function successfully the urban mobility system must provide access to social, economic and opportunities for its citizens. To be sustainable - mobility must be safe, clean and accessible and affordable for all, especially those in marginalised groups. To deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change urban access needs to be expanded whilst minimising the negative environmental and health impacts.

Sustainable urban mobility solutions are available and have been tested at scale - but cities lack the necessary human capacity to develop and implement comprehensive sustainable urban mobility plans in an open and inclusive way.

This session will present urban mobility capacity building experiences and opportunities available to urban stakeholders and urban mobility experts and introduce some of the funding agencies (e.g. Agence Francaise Developement (AFD), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Islamic Development Bank (IDB)) who wish to support urban mobility capacity building in Developing Countries in the next years. The event will include an update on the first year´s progress implementing the Transforming Urban Mobility Initiative (TUMI) that was launched at Habitat III and is funded by the German Government.

The target audience is cities and cities networks from developing countries with an interest to solve urban mobility problems as part of a wholistic approach to sustainable urban development.

The output of the Networking Event will be:

a) improved understanding of the urban capacity opportunities available for cities,

b) new contacts between the actors needing support and agencies with urban capacity building products and resources,

c) better understanding of cities capacity building requirements,

The outcome of the Networking event will be new capacity building opportunities and long-term relationships that will enable cities to develop affordable and locally appropriate Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans for inclusive and sustainable urban development.
