Summary

As a coalition of 70 international partners, the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN) is focused on tenure security and promoting good land governance across the continuum of land rights. Working in both urban and rural areas, the GLTN was recognized within the New Urban Agenda for valuable contributions made to generating evidence-based and practical guidance towards achievement of the SDGs, as well as, securing land and property rights for all.

Rapidly urbanizing and possessing over two-thirds of the world's population, the Asia-Pacific region will be predominantly urban by 2018. In this context, secure land tenure and property rights are fundamental to ensuring shelter and livelihoods, and for the realization of human rights, poverty reduction, economic prosperity and sustainable development. Indeed, for many across the Asia-Pacific, a relationship with land is often intertwined with life itself.

Moving towards regional and country level engagements, a Regional Land Tenure Initiative in Asia and the Pacific region was launched in 2013 with key partners including the World Bank, UNESCAP, FAO, UN-Habitat and other regional partners. Examining closely the challenges, opportunities and way forwards for 15 countries in the region selected for their geographic spread, different exposure to cross-cutting issues, and their differences in land reform history, culture and capacity, a publication was launched titled 'Land Tenure in the Asia-Pacific' in 2015.

Committed to the development of urban spatial frameworks and territorial systems which preserve and promote the ecological and social function of land, this networking event will bring together partners to discuss related policies, tools and mechanisms. With a view to ensure a wider range of affordable, sustainable housing options including tenure options, the event will also emphasize the role of effective land-use planning, registration and governance.
