Summary

This networking event supports implementation of the third transformative commitment of the New Urban Agenda (paragraphs 63-80) which commits to “strengthening the sustainable management of resources, including land, water (oceans, seas and fresh water), energy, materials, forests and food” (paragraph 71) and the preservation and promotion of “ecological and social function of land, including coastal areas that support cities and human settlements” (paragraph 69). By emphasizing the three circular economy principles: 1) design out waste and pollution 2) keep products, components and materials at their highest value and in use 3) regenerate natural systems; this session will explore how transitioning towards a circular economy at the city level contributes to the implementation of the commitments put forth in the New Urban Agenda, and achieving SDG11 “sustainable cities and communities” and SDG12 “Sustainable Production and Consumption”. In order to meet the third transformative commitment, UN Environment and its partners will advocate during this networking event for a systems approach to city planning towards a circular economy, in line with national-level urban policies. The circular economy concept puts emphasis on the economic opportunities, the effective and efficient use of resources, environmental protection, and the minimization of negative externalities on society. Crucially, a circular economy relies on system-wide innovation, and aims to “redefine products and services to design waste out, while minimizing negative impacts. Underpinned by a transition to renewable energy sources, the circular model builds economic, natural and social capital.” (Ellen MacArthur Foundation).

The event will be a two-part panel discussion, pairing cities and “circular economy solutions providers,” combined with two breakout networking and discussion sessions for the participants. It will be composed of a mix of subject experts, practitioners, and potential contributors to the work.
