The event will be a Book Launching as well as the consolidation of the Latin America and Caribbean Network of Sustainable Urban Development (REDEUS_LAC). The programme will start with a ten-minute presentation of the book contents by the General Coordinator of REDEUS_LAC, followed by three commentators, a Latin American expert that has been working precisely on an Action Plan for implementing the NUA in the Region, and two regional experts on the subject: one from REDEUS_LAC and one from Naerus, a European network that specializes in the global south. Finally we will leave space for questions and comments from the audience.
Both objectives –the consolidation of the network and the book launching– contribute directly to the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
The network, REDEUS_LAC is a relatively new platform created to promote exchange of knowledge and experience, discussion and capacity building in topics related with sustainable urban development in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). Since its birth, REDEUS_LAC has been linked to the Habitat meetings and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The kick-off meeting of the network took place at Toluca, a regional pre-Habitat III event in October 2016, and since then we started working on this REDEUS_LAC book, to be launched at the Side Event:The Latin American and Caribbean way towards urban sustainability. Reflection and action on the NUA. The book, written by members of the network examines the six thematic areas proposed in HIII from the perspective of the regional challenges for the implementation of the NUA. We believe that there is much to learn from the sharing of our regional experiences –the succesful and the unsuccesful– and from comparing and discusing the challenges to be met in the road towards sustainability.
