Summary

Led by the University of Birmingham, this training event will focus on the potential of technological tools for youth-led community participation and urban data collection. For the achievement and monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals, collecting data on urban living conditions is vital. Equally important is the inclusion of diverse groups of people in urban planning processes, to ensure the successful development of sustainable, safe and inclusive cities and communities.

This training event, will provide a space for understanding the importance of youth-led community participation and the role of technologies in providing a platform for participatory data collection. Participants at the training event will be shown the latest innovative tools, methodologies and instruments to support the implementation and evaluation of the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in terms of the provision of safe and affordable homes and communities. The training will showcase a series of case studies where technologies have been used to improve the living conditions of informal settlements through participatory, youth-led processes.

The event will include, i) presentations by a range of stakeholders on the use of their successful, innovative, technology orientated participatory tools; ii) a practice-based activity on the use of the Map my Community app tool, for participatory urban development; and iii) a group discussion on the challenges, potentials and possible avenues for implementing technological methodological tools in youth-led community participation.
